Remote Worker Interview with Hayley Akins Freelance Motion Designer

by | Oct 26, 2018

Hayley Akins is a freelance motion designer and the founder of Motion Hatch, a podcast and community through which she teaches other motion designers how to improve their business. Read our interview below to learn more about what it’s like to be motion designer and podcaster all while being remote.

Tell us a little bit about you and what you do for a living

I work as a freelance motion designer and I also run a community and podcast called Motion Hatch. Motion Hatch helps motion designers and animators do better business. We talk about how to get clients, how to charge, how to focus on the work that align with your values.

We also sometimes focus on remote working and location independence. I will be launching the Freelance Contract Bundle soon which is a set of freelance contract templates for animators.

How long have you been working remotely, and what is the best thing about working remotely in your opinion?

I have my own office that’s close to my home so I enjoy not having to do the commute. Also freelancing allowed me to start my side project Motion Hatch.

How did you start Motion Hatch?

I launched my podcast in November of last year. I asked some high profile people in the industry to be on the podcast and also I asked them to share it. This helped a lot in raising the profile of the podcast. It’s great just to go out there and ask. People are very open and I highly reccomend collaboration as a way to grow a business.

In your work, what is the one thing (tool, software, etc) you couldn’t live without and WHY?

Podcasts! Haha I have a podcast but I also listen to them all the time! It helps me focus.

Home Office vs Cafe vs Coworking Space? Which is your go to and why?

Coworking spaces. I don’t like being at home I’m always feeling bad for not doing the housework or getting distracted by my cat Elvis.

What is the worst aspect about working remotely?

Not having other animators around to collaborate with. Although I do do that remotely sometimes too.

What does a normal day look like for you? Do you have a specific routine you stick to?

Yes, I normally go to my office at 9am and leave between 5 and 6pm.

What is your favorite way to spend your time when you’re not working?

Trying to relax! Going into nature and walking, playing with my cat. I also meditate I find it helps me switch off.

How do you stay motivated on a day to day basis?

I write lots of lists and have a journal that helps me make progress and organise things.

What is your favorite place in the world to live and work from as a location independent worker?

I like my studio. But If I were to choose another country probably Croatia.

What book or course do you find yourself recommending the most and why?

The One Thing by Gary Keller. It helps you focus by asking you the question. “What’s the ONE Thing you can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
